extraordinary seeds hidden within the brilliant blue fruits of evergreen trees,
growing in the volcanic earth of the sacred Himalaya mountains. Researching
their miraculous spiritual powers, the masters strung the Rudraksha seeds
together and realized that, by wearing them, the Rudraksha amplified, radiated
and channeled peace, power and protection against negativity. They also found
that Rudraksha provided many divine channels, reflected in their different

Although a great number of people try meditation at some point in their lives, a small percentage actually stick with it for the long-term. This is unfortunate, and a possible reason is that many beginners do not begin with a mindset needed to make the practice sustainable.

The purpose of this article is to provide 20 practical recommendations to help beginners get past the initial hurdles and integrate meditation over the long term:

1) Make it a formal practice. You will only get to the next level in meditation by setting aside specific time (preferably two times a day) to be still.

2) Start with the breath. Breathing deep slows the heart rate, relaxes the muscles, focuses the mind and is an ideal way to begin practice.

3) Stretch first. Stretching loosens the muscles and tendons allowing you to sit (or lie) more comfortably. Additionally, stretching starts the process of “going inward” and brings added attention to the body.

4) Meditate with Purpose. Beginners must understand that meditation is an ACTIVE process. The art of focusing your attention to a single point is hard work, and you have to be purposefully engaged!

5) Notice frustration creep up on you. This is very common for beginners as we think “hey, what am I doing here” or “why can’t I just quiet my damn mind already”. When this happens, really focus in on your breath and let the frustrated feelings go.

6) Experiment. Although many of us think of effective meditation as a Yogi sitting cross-legged beneath a Bonzi tree, beginners should be more experimental and try different types of meditation. Try sitting, lying, eyes open, eyes closed, etc.

7) Feel your body parts. A great practice for beginning meditators is to take notice of the body when a meditative state starts to take hold. Once the mind quiets, put all your attention to the feet and then slowly move your way up the body (include your internal organs). This is very healthy and an indicator that you are on the right path.

8) Pick a specific room in your home to meditate. Make sure it is not the same room where you do work, exercise, or sleep. Place candles and other spiritual paraphernalia in the room to help you feel at ease.

9) Read a book (or two) on meditation. Preferably an instructional guide AND one that describes the benefits of deep meditative states. This will get you motivated. John Kabat-Zinn’s Wherever You Go, There You Are is terrific for beginners.

10) Commit for the long haul. Meditation is a life-long practice, and you will benefit most by NOT examining the results of your daily practice. Just do the best you can every day, and then let it go!

11) Listen to instructional tapes and CDs.

12) Generate moments of awareness during the day. Finding your breath and “being present” while not in formal practice is a wonderful way to evolve your meditation habits.

13) Make sure you will not be disturbed. One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is not insuring peaceful practice conditions. If you have it in the back of your mind that the phone might ring, your kids might wake, or your coffee pot might whistle than you will not be able to attain a state of deep relaxation.

14) Notice small adjustments. For beginning meditators, the slightest physical movements can transform a meditative practice from one of frustration to one of renewal. These adjustments may be barely noticeable to an observer, but they can mean everything for your practice.

15) Use a candle. Meditating with eyes closed can be challenging for a beginner. Lighting a candle and using it as your point of focus allows you to strengthen your attention with a visual cue. This can be very powerful.

16) Do NOT Stress. This may be the most important tip for beginners, and the hardest to implement. No matter what happens during your meditation practice, do not stress about it. This includes being nervous before meditating and angry afterwards. Meditation is what it is, and just do the best you can at the time.

17) Do it together. Meditating with a partner or loved one can have many wonderful benefits, and can improve your practice. However, it is necessary to make sure that you set agreed-upon ground rules before you begin!

18) Meditate early in the morning. Without a doubt, early morning is an ideal
time to practice: it is quieter, your mind is not filled with the usual clutter, and there is less chance you will be disturbed. Make it a habit to get up half an hour earlier to meditate.

19) Be Grateful at the end. Once your practice is through, spend 2-3 minutes feeling appreciative of the opportunity to practice and your mind’s ability to focus.

20) Notice when your interest in meditation begins to wane. Meditation is
hard work, and you will inevitably come to a point where it seemingly does not fit into the picture anymore. THIS is when you need your practice the most and I recommend you go back to the book(s) or the CD’s you listened to and become re-invigorated with the practice. Chances are that losing the ability to focus on meditation is parallel with your inability to focus in other areas of your life!

Meditation is an absolutely wonderful practice, but can be very difficult in the beginning. Use the tips described in this article to get your practice to the next level!

Our brains are by far our most important organs. Here are 10 of the most surprising things our brains do and what we can learn from them:

1. Your brain does creative work better when you’re tired.

Here’s how it breaks down:

If you’re a morning lark, say, you’ll want to favor those morning hours when you’re feeling fresher to get your most demanding, analytic work done. Using your brain to solve problems, answer questions and make decisions is best done when you’re at your peak. For night owls, this is obviously a much later period in the day.

On the other hand, if you’re trying to do creative work, you’ll actually have more luck when you’re more tired and your brain isn’t functioning as efficiently. This sounds crazy, but it actually makes sense when you look at the reasoning behind it. It’s one of the reasons that great ideas often happen in the shower after a long day of work.

If you’re tired, your brain is not as good at filtering out distractions and focusing on a particular task. It’s also a lot less efficient at remembering connections between ideas or concepts. These are both good things when it comes to creative work, since this kind of work requires us to make new connections, be open to new ideas and think in new ways. So a tired, fuzzy brain is much more use to us when working on creative projects.

This Scientific American article explains how distractions can actually be a good thing for creative thinking:

Insight problems involve thinking outside the box. This is where susceptibility to “distraction” can be of benefit. At off-peak times we are less focused, and may consider a broader range of information. This wider scope gives us access to more alternatives and diverse interpretations, thus fostering innovation and insight.

2. Stress can change the size of your brain (and make it smaller).

I bet you didn’t know that stress is actually the most common cause of changes in brain function. I was surprised to find this out when I looked into how stress affects our brains.

I also found some research that showed signs of brain size decreasing due to stress.

One study used baby monkeys to test the effects of stress on development and long-term mental health. Half the monkeys were cared for by their peers for six months, while the other half remained with their mothers. Afterwards, the monkeys were returned to typical social groups for several months before the researchers scanned their brains.

In the monkeys who had been removed from their mothers and cared for by their peers, areas of their brains related to stress were still enlarged, even after being in normal social conditions for several months.

3. It is literally impossible for our brains to multitask.

Multitasking is something we’ve long been encouraged to practice, but it turns outmultitasking is actually impossible. When we think we’re multitasking, we’re actually context switching. That is, we’re quickly switching back and forth between different tasks rather than doing them at the same time.

The book Brain Rules explains how detrimental multitasking can be:

Research shows your error rate goes up 50 percent and it takes you twice as long to do things.

The problem with multitasking is that we’re splitting our brain’s resources. We’re giving less attention to each task, and probably performing worse on all of them:

When the brain tries to do two things at once, it divides and conquers, dedicating one-half of our gray matter to each task.

When our brains handle a single task, the prefrontal cortex plays a big part. Here’s how it helps us achieve a goal or complete a task:

The anterior part of this brain region forms the goal or intention — for example, “I want that cookie” — and the posterior prefrontal cortex talks to the rest of the brain so that your hand reaches toward the cookie jar and your mind knows whether you have the cookie.

A study in Paris found that when a second task was required, the brains of the study volunteers split up, with each hemisphere working alone on a task. The brain was overloaded by the second task and couldn’t perform at its full capacity, because it needed to split its resources.

4. Naps improve your brain’s day-to-day performance.

We’re pretty clear on how important sleep is for our brains, but what about naps? It turns out that these short bursts of sleep are actually really useful.

Here are a couple of ways that napping can benefit the brain:

Improved Memory

In one study, participants memorized illustrated cards to test their memory strength. After memorizing a set of cards, they had a 40-minute break wherein one group napped and the other stayed awake. After the break both groups were tested on their memory of the cards, and the group who had napped performed better:

Much to the surprise of the researchers, the sleep group performed significantly better, retaining on average 85 percent of the patterns, compared to 60 percent for those who had remained awake.

Apparently, napping actually helps our brain solidify memories:

Research indicates that when a memory is first recorded in the brain — in the hippocampus, to be specific — it’s still “fragile” and easily forgotten, especially if the brain is asked to memorize more things. Napping, it seems, pushes memories to the neocortex, the brain’s “more permanent storage,” preventing them from being “overwritten.”

What Happens in the Brain During a Nap

Some recent research has found that the right side of the brain is far more active during a nap than the left side, which stays fairly quiet while we’re asleep. Despite the fact that 95 percent of the population is right-handed, with the left side of their brains being the most dominant, the right side is consistently the more active hemisphere during sleep.

The study’s author, Andrei Medvedev, speculated that the right side of the brain handles “housekeeping” duties while we’re asleep.

So while the left side of your brain takes some time off to relax, the right side is clearing out your temporary storage areas, pushing information into long-term storage and solidifying your memories from the day.

5. Your vision trumps all other senses.

Despite being one of our five main senses, vision seems to take precedence over the others:

Hear a piece of information, and three days later you’ll remember 10 percent of it. Add a picture and you’ll remember 65 percent.

Pictures beat text as well, in part because reading is so inefficient for us. Our brain sees words as lots of tiny pictures, and we have to identify certain features in the letters to be able to read them. That takes time.

In fact, vision is so powerful that the best wine tasters in the world have been known to describe a dyed white wine as a red.

Not only is it surprising that we rely on our vision so much, but it actually isn’t even that good! Take this fact, for instance:

Our brain is doing all this guessing because it doesn’t know where things are. In a three-dimensional world, the light actually falls on our retina in a two-dimensional fashion. So our brain approximates viewable image.

Let’s look at this image. It shows you how much of your brain is dedicated just to vision and how it affects other parts of the brain. It’s a truly staggering amount, compared to any other areas:

6. Introversion and extroversion come from different wiring in the brain.

I just recently realized that introversion and extroversion are not actually related to how outgoing or shy we are but to how our brains recharge.

Here’s how the brains of introverts and extroverts differ:

Research has actually found that there is a difference in the brains of extroverted and introverted people in terms of how we process rewards and how our genetic makeup differs. Extroverts’ brains respond more strongly when a gamble pays off. Part of this is simply genetic, but it’s partly a difference in their dopamine systems as well.

An experiment that had people take gambles while in a brain scanner found the following:

When the gambles they took paid off, the more extroverted group showed a stronger response in two crucial brain regions: the amygdala and the nucleus accumbens.

The nucleus accumbens is part of the dopamine system, which affects how we learn and is generally known for motivating us to search for rewards. The difference in the dopamine system in the extrovert’s brain tends to push them toward seeking out novelty, taking risks and enjoying unfamiliar or surprising situations more than others. The amygdala is responsible for processing emotional stimuli, which gives extroverts that rush of excitement when they try something highly stimulating that might overwhelm an introvert.

More research has actually shown that the difference comes from how introverts and extroverts process stimuli. That is, the stimulation coming into our brains is processed differently depending on your personality. For extroverts, the pathway is much shorter. It runs through an area where taste, touch, visual and auditory sensory processing take place. For introverts, stimuli run through a long, complicated pathway in areas of the brain associated with remembering, planning and solving problems.

7. We tend to like people who make mistakes more.

Apparently, making mistakes actually makes us more likeable, due to something called the pratfall effect.

Kevan Lee recently explained how this works on the Buffer blog:

Those who never make mistakes are perceived as less likeable than those who commit the occasional faux pas. Messing up draws people closer to you, makes you more human. Perfection creates distance and an unattractive air of invincibility. Those of us with flaws win out every time.

This theory was tested by psychologist Elliot Aronson. In his test, he asked participants to listen to recordings of people answering a quiz. Select recordings included the sound of the person knocking over a cup of coffee. When participants were asked to rate the quizzers on likability, the coffee-spill group came out on top.

So this is why we tend to dislike people who seem perfect! And now we know that making minor mistakes isn’t the worst thing in the world; in fact, it can work in our favor.

8. Meditation can rewire your brain for the better.

Here’s another one that really surprised me. I thought meditation was only good for improving focus and helping me stay calm throughout the day, but it actually has a whole bunch of great benefits.

Here are a few examples:

What happens without meditation is that there’s a section of our brains that’s sometimes called the “me center.” (It’s technically the medial prefrontal cortex.) This is the part that processes information relating to ourselves and our experiences. Normally the neural pathways from the bodily sensation and fear centers of the brain to the “me center” are really strong. When you experience a scary or upsetting sensation, it triggers a strong reaction in your “me center,” making you feel scared and under attack.

Here is how anxiety and agitation decrease with just a 20-minute meditation session:

When we meditate, especially when we are just getting started with meditation, we weaken this neural connection. This means that we don’t react as strongly to sensations that might have once lit up our “me centers.” As we weaken this connection, we simultaneously strengthen the connection between what’s known as our “assessment center” (the part of our brains known for reasoning) and our bodily sensation and fear centers. So when we experience scary or upsetting sensations, we can more easily look at them rationally. Here’s a good example:

For example, when you experience pain, rather than becoming anxious and assuming it means something is wrong with you, you can watch the pain rise and fall without becoming ensnared in a story about what it might mean.

Better Memory

One of the things that meditation has been linked to is improving rapid memory recall. Catherine Kerr, a researcher at the Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging and the Osher Research Center, found that people who practiced mindful meditation were able to adjust the brain wave that screens out distractions and increase their productivity more quickly that those who did not meditate. She said that this ability to ignore distractions could explain “their superior ability to rapidly remember and incorporate new facts.” This seems to be very similar to the power of being exposed to new situations, which will also dramatically improve our memory of things.

Meditation has also been linked to increasing compassion, decreasing stress, improving memory skills and even increasing the amount of gray matter in the brain.

9. Exercise can reorganize the brain and boost your willpower.

Sure, exercise is good for your body, but what about your brain? Well, apparently there’s a link between exercise and mental alertness, in a similar way that happiness and exercise are related:

A lifetime of exercise can result in a sometimes astonishing elevation in cognitive performance, compared with those who are sedentary. Exercisers outperform couch potatoes in tests that measure long-term memory, reasoning, attention, problem-solving, even so-called fluid-intelligence tasks.

Of course, exercise can also make us happier, as we’ve explored before:

If you start exercising, your brain recognizes this as a moment of stress. As your heart pressure increases, the brain thinks you are either fighting the enemy or fleeing from it. To protect yourself and your brain from stress, you release a protein called BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor). This BDNF has a protective and also reparative element to your memory neurons and acts as a reset switch. That’s why we often feel so at ease and things are clear after exercising, and eventually happy.

At the same time, endorphins, another chemical to fight stress, are released in your brain. The main purpose of endorphis is this, writes researcher McGovern:

These endorphins tend to minimize the discomfort of exercise, block the feeling of pain and are even associated with a feeling of euphoria.

10. You can make your brain think time is going slowly by doing new things.

Ever wished you didn’t find yourself saying, “Where does the time go!” every June when you realize the year is half-over? This is a neat trick that relates to how our brains perceive time. Once you know how it works, you can trick your brain into thinking time is moving more slowly.

Essentially, our brains take a whole bunch of information from our senses and organize it in a way that makes sense to us, before we ever perceive it. So what we think is our sense of time is actually just a whole bunch of information presented to us in a particular way, as determined by our brains:

When our brains receive new information, it doesn’t necessarily come in the proper order. This information needs to be reorganized and presented to us in a form we understand. When familiar information is processed, this doesn’t take much time at all. New information, however, is a bit slower and makes time feel elongated.

Even stranger, it isn’t just a single area of the brain that controls our time perception; it’s done by a whole bunch of brain areas, unlike our common five senses, which can each be pinpointed to a single, specific area.

When we receive lots of new information, it takes our brains a while to process it all. The longer this processing takes, the longer that period of time feels.

When we’re in life-threatening situations, for instance, “we remember the time as longer because we record more of the experience. Life-threatening experiences make us really pay attention, but we don’t gain superhuman powers of perception.”

Credits: **This article was originally featured on HuffingtonPost

Some of us give this question much thought while others may pull out the first set of clothes from their cupboard.

We generally pick the clothes that we will wear for the day based broadly on where we are going or the weather forecast. There are a myriad other influences such as the prevailing fashion style, whether we fit into the clothes, our mood, time in hand, etc. which finally seals our decision.

We go through this process daily, however we rarely consider the spiritual effect of clothes on us as a reason to wear or buy clothes. In fact most of us (and this includes the manufacturers of our clothes) are unaware that we are affected spiritually by the clothes that we wear. In this article we will share with you knowledge obtained through spiritual research on how the clothes we choose to wear can be either to our spiritual benefit or detriment.

Spiritual research on clothing and how to dress at the Spiritual Science Research Foundation (SSRF) is undertaken using advanced sixth sense. The research is carried out by seekers ))) who use their advanced sixth sense gained through years of spiritual practice (sadhana ) and most importantly under the guidance of H.H. Dr. Athavale. They perceive the spiritual vibrations emanating from various types of clothes based on aspects such as colour, shape and material and note down the readings gained through sixth sense. Some seekers have an advanced sixth sense of vision and can actually see the various spiritual vibrations. By drawing pictures based on subtle-knowledge, they give us a glimpse into the spiritual dimension, a realm beyond our common perception. In this section we will be sharing a number of such pictures based on subtle-knowledge which will provide a greater insight into the effect of the clothes we wear.

3. Purpose of clothes from a spiritual perspective

We are all aware of the purpose of clothes from a physical and psychological perspective. From a spiritual perspective the purpose of clothes are twofold:

Negative energies: At the Spiritual Science Research Foundation, we use the term 'negative energies' as a collective noun to represent all types of entities in the spiritual dimension that intend to harm humility right from the 'common ghost' to the highest level 'māntriks'. If the spiritual strength of a common ghost is between 1 and 10 units, then a māntrik's strength ranges a billion close to infinity.

1. To imbibe and emit sāttviktā: Depending on how we dress, clothes can act as a receptor to imbibe positive and divine frequencies from the atmosphere around us. In doing so they can transmit these positive vibrations and purity into our consciousness.

2. To protect from attacks of negative energies (ghosts, devils, demons etc.):If the clothes we wear are able to harness positive energy, then in doing so they are able to protect us from negative energies. If clothes are tāmasik in nature then they attract negative energies or ghosts from the spiritual dimension.

Something to keep in mind: Ghosts and negative energies from the spiritual dimension capitalise on any increase in Raja-Tama vibrations in the environment. Spiritually inappropriate attire is Raja-Tama predominant and hence attracts negative energies.

Every object has its own distinct and unique spiritual vibrations. The vibrations of clothes depend on factors such as type of cloth, shape, colour, design, stitching of cloth, etc. The more sāttvik these factors are, the greater is the Sattva component of the final product that is the clothes. This article is about how to raise the purity in our clothes while also reducing the Tama component which causes spiritual ignorance and inertia and distress from negative energies.

Natural fibres such as silk and cotton have a greater ability to attract, imbibe and retain divine frequencies from the atmosphere. On the other hand clothes made from artificial fibres nylon, terylene, rayon and polyester have a diminished ability to attract divine frequencies. Hence it is better to wear clothes where there is minimal stitching. This is one of the reasons traditional attire of Indian women or the sari, a silk 9-yard dress, is considered to be the most sattvikdress. For the same reason, clothes that are held up with a knot like the rectangular piece of unstitched cloth, usually around 4-5 metres long, wrapped around the waist and the legs and knotted at the waist by Hindus or the dhoti have a greater spiritual benefit as opposed to clothes sticthed with buttons.

Along with this, clothes that are hand-made while chanting the Name of God, have a better ability to attract positive spiritual vibrations. Extensive and rapid piercing of clothes with a sewing machine attracts distressing vibrations.

The condition that clothes are in also plays a role in affecting us at a spiritual level.

Unwashed clothes attract negative energies. For example a big brand jeans company encourages their customers not to wash their jeans. From a spiritual perspective, as dirt and sweat builds up in clothes so do the Raja-Tama vibrations. On the other hand, washed clothes are not charged with the individual’s vibrations and dirt, and therefore their ability to attract the Sattva component is high.

Wearing torn clothes is also considered a fashionable trend with the younger generation. However torn clothes attract negative vibrations.

When it comes to old and new clothes, the latter is more conducive to attracting divine energies. For example a washed new silk garment will be better able to attract divine frequencies as opposed to a washed old silk garment.

Clothes act as a protective covering from negative energies. Short clothes not only have the potential to arouse sexual desire in the opposite sex but also the attention of ghosts and negative energies in the vicinity. Negative energies get attracted towards women wearing revealing clothes and harass them from the subtle in order to fulfil their sexual desires. At SSRF we have come across many instances where women have been sexually abused by a subtle-entity with or without their knowledge.

The style of clothing has many aspects to it, one of which is the fit of the clothes. Garments need to be comfortable and not too tight. If they are too tight, then the friction between the cloth and skin creates sound waves of subtle-air, which causes distressing waves from the atmosphere to be propelled towards the person. A looser fit allows for a subtle-void to be created between the cloth and the skin which allows the Divine Consciousness (Chaitanya) from the atmosphere to be attracted and retained.

Draping of cloth on the body is also another aspect to consider as depending on the way it is done helps in either the flow or obstruction of energies. Let’s take the example of the sari . Our spiritual research showed that there is a reason why a sari is designed with pleats in the front. This instigates a flow of energy from the folds of a sari towards the ground and it protects women from negative energies emanating from the subtle-region of Hell (Patal)

Fashions may ebb and flow with each season as fashion designers chase the next fad. However our spiritual research has shown that through the centuries, it is the 9-yard silk sari followed by the 6-yard sari which have been and still are the most spiritually conducive garments to wear for a woman.

4.8 Borrowing clothes – a spiritual taboo

Borrowing clothes, shoes, caps from a friend may help to temporarily extend one’s wardrobe, however the spiritual disadvantages outweigh the advantages.

In today’s world a large section of society is affected by negative energies. As a result the vibrations of these negative energies remain in the clothes as distressing energy. Wearing the clothes of a person who is possessed by negative energies can be extremely detrimental from a spiritual standpoint. As we do not have the sixth sense ability to understand who is affected or possessed with negative energies it is best to refrain from borrowing of clothes altogether.

Refer to the article on how many people are affected or possessed by demonic energies.

We may experience a similar effect when buying second-hand clothes. If we have no alternative to buying second-hand clothing, it is highly recommended we spiritually purify the clothes before wearing them.

5. In summary – how to dress

The information provided in this article shows us some of the main ways that clothes can affect us at a spiritual level. Every effort we make to abide by these guiding principles helps bring us an inch closer to the ideal sattvik lifestyle. At a practical level there are some of the aspects above which one can heed and put into practice immediately, for example; avoid wearing black coloured clothes. The faster we incorporate these changes into the way we dress, the better off we will be.

On the other hand it may not be so easy to adhere to some of the other points given above. It is important to understand that whatever efforts one can make to increase the Sattva component in us adds to our overall purity and at least that should be acted upon when choosing our clothing.

When we practice Spirituality according to the six basic principles of spiritual practice it helps to open up our sixth sense ability. We are able to experience the above information at a vibrational level. Once we gain the ability to experience subtle-vibrations, we empower ourselves to make better decisions about everyday activities which finally help us lead a sattvik and fulfilling life.

1. What is salt water remedy?

Ghosts (demons, devils, negative energies, etc.) affect people and cause distress to them through their subtle black energy. Black energy can create a variety of problems such as depression, unclear thinking or malfunction of an organ which lead to even further difficulties such as addiction, financial problems or chest pain respectively.

Black energy : The primary weapon used by negative energies is black energy which is a spiritual energy capable of manipulating any process on the Earth plane. The extent of this manipulation depends on the strength of the attacking negative energy.

Ghosts transmit their black energy to the people that they target/ attack and create large stores of it in their bodies. It is difficult to get rid of this black energy except through a generalised spiritual remedy such asspiritual practice or a more specific one like the salt water remedy.

The salt water remedy is a simple but powerful spiritual remedy to counteract the harmful unseen black energy and drain it out of our system. By doing so, we do not waste our spiritual practice in counteracting black energy. Instead it can be used to bring about our spiritual growth.
2. When should we use the salt water remedy?

Each one of us is affected by ghosts to varying degrees. As a result, we all have some degree of black energy in our bodies. Performing the salt water treatment on a daily basis helps to remove this black energy from our body.

Salt water treatment should especially be done when one experiences symptoms such as:

Lethargy
Reduction in promptness
Inability to think
Excessive thoughts especially when they are negative in nature
Anger or any other extreme emotion
Stress
Any form of physical illness

When we are experiencing any one of the above symptoms, we are in a weakened state physically, emotionally or spiritually. The ghosts attack us in this weakened state and infuse more black energy and play up the symptoms to an even greater extent.

Note: Every time we are in a weakened state (especially at a spiritual level), we leave ourselves open to attack, as it is in this state that ghosts (demons, devils, negative energies, etc.) require the least amount of energy to affect us.

In cases of severe distress, the salt water remedy can be repeated 2-3 times in a day at 2-3 hour intervals for better results.

3. What is required for the salt water remedy?

A large sized bucket
Water filled in the bucket (up to 50%) to cover the ankles when the feet are immersed in the bucket

Rock salt
A towel
A foot mat

4. How is the salt water remedy performed?

4.1 Step by step instructions

Preparation:

Fill a bucket (up to 50%) with water so as to cover the ankles. Add 2 tablespoons of rock salt.

Pray to God sincerely and with faith to remove the black energy in you. Also pray specifically for destroying the black energy of the ghosts (demons, devils, negative energies, etc.) affecting you. Prayer is an important ingredient which enhances the effectiveness of this remedy.

The remedy:

Sit upright with your feet immersed in the salt water. Keep a distance of at least 2-3 cms between the feet. This aids in the maximum discharge of black energy. If the feet touch each other, then there is obstacle to the discharge of black energy through the feet.

Keep the feet in the salt water for 10 – 15 minutes.

While the feet are immersed, chant the Name of God according to your religion.

On completion:

After the completion of the remedy give gratitude to God and pray for the creation of a protective sheath around you.

Then throw the salt water in the toilet and rinse the bucket with fresh water.

Chant the Name of God according to your religion for 2-3 minutes.

Real Life Experiences & Descriptions of Kundalini Rising

Are you going through a kundalini awakening episode or experience? Let’s find out…

Kundalini awakening symptoms are truly a very intriguing subject. Really there is no correct answer to the question, "What are the symptoms of Kundalini Rising?", as thankfully, each of us is absolutely unique and thus, on a unique trajectory on the path to Kundalini Awakening. That said, there are some common kundalini experiences that are often reported, which I would like to share with you in this article.

Although we can draw up endless lists of symptoms from third party accounts, I would like to instead make this series about kundalini symptoms that you or I have actually experienced. In this article, I will give a recent account from one of my students about what she experienced shortly after class, and then I will add my own kundalini experiences and observations as well.

In the comments section, I encourage you to add any kundalini awakening experiences or symptoms you have felt, so others can better understand what they might be going through. Here is the recent email I received from my student, Aida:
Aida’s Experience of Kundalini Awakening:

I am a student of the "Gentle Kundalini Class". I just finished taking a series of exercise specifically for the spine.

As I left the class I felt energized as I usually feel after each class, but this time it was a little different, I was feeling extra aware of my surrounding. Like a light turned on. My back was so straight. It lasted all day.

If I could go to class every morning I would go. It makes my day start right in every way. And there are times when I am not feeling like going to class and I push myself to go and do not regret it.

Thank you for being my teacher.
Aida D.

For those interested, here is a link to the Spinal Warmup Kundalini Yoga Kriya we did in class that day. Thank you Aida, for sharing your personal experiences with us.

This particular experience of kundalini is very interesting and significant. This is because it is the common experience of advanced meditation and of kundalini yoga. In the article, Powerful Kundalini Yoga Battles Profound Zen Meditation, I described my own such experience with kundalini awakening, but not from doing kundalini yoga, but instead from doingSilent Mind Meditation!

Aida’s experience points at the two things that all yoga and meditation boils down to. Energy and Awareness.

My favorite description of Kundalini Yoga is, "The Yoga of Awareness," and as you see from her account, she felt more aware, as the energy of kundalini had risen up her spine. In meditation, it is the same. The demand for intense awareness, in order to comprehend the thought process via direct perception, leads to energy (kundalini) rising up and elongating the spine. Awareness then follows.

Jiddu Krishnamurti describes this experience of kundlaini energy flowing up the spine as "The rush of water filling up and thus causing a pipe to stand erect."

When we insist that the spine be straight during meditation, it is simply to facilitate this awakening and thus, to assist in being more aware. I have experienced kundalini rising and puling up with such force, during meditation, that it sometimes make me feel as if I am going to be launched right off the ground or as if it’s going to pull my head off and up into the sky.
Symptoms of Kundalini Awakening:

I am going to describe some of the physical symptoms my students or I have felt due to kundalini awakening. I know there are many emotional and mental symptoms as well, and you are welcome to share those with us in the comments section below. I am grouping the experiences into 3 categories, common, uncommon and rare, according to what I have observed.
Common Kundalini Awakening Symptoms:
Tingling in the body and brain region. Also sometimes described as ants walking, tickling energy or flushes of energy. The brain being flushed with energy is quite pleasant :-).
Heat or cold in the system, or running along various channels and chakra centers.
Fluttering or twitching of muscles.
Pinching or burning in various regions of the body or brain.

Uncommon Kundalini Awakening Symptoms:
Pressure in the Third Eye Region (Ajna Chakra). This is pressure, tingling or other sensation in the center of the forehead. Can go on for years (14 years and counting so far for me). Caution: If the pressure, due to certain practices, intensifies to uncomfortable levels you feel are "immense", you should cease that practice and consult a competent kundalini yoga teacher.
Sudden bursts of energy anywhere in the body. These are almost always short lived, from a few seconds to a few minutes.
Spontaneous yoga asans or kundalini yoga movements. They may come on spontaneously, or they may take over, as if on auto-pilot when one is practicing Kundalini Yoga Kriyas or Exercises (For an example see article: Explosive Kundalini Rising in Class Today).
Kundalini Shakti rising up and elongating the spine.
Incredible feeling of love and desire for your partner (not ordinary lust, alcohol induced or otherwise :-). Usually comes upon you spontaneously, deep in the night. Sex feels like it’s the first such experience and the intense feelings of attraction emanate from somewhere beyond yourself.
Unfortunately, pain in the lower back, back of the neck and headaches.

Rare Kundalini Awakening Symptoms:
Experience of divine light within. Very intense light, usually pure white and incredibly beautiful. I call it the Radiation of the Lord.
Tremendous vibratory energy (sometimes feels like it’s coming from the inner ears). Very blissful, but can intensify to the point where it would completely overwhelm your consciousness if you let it.
Spontaneous bliss, intensely pleasurable.
This one is a bit scary. Complete paralysis of the body. Complete immobility and rigidity takes place. As with the all consuming vibratory energy, it requires some courage to allow.
This one is exceedingly rare. I have experienced it only once in my life, and have only ever read about it being experienced by one other – the master of awareness, G. I. Gurdjieff. The arms and legs churn like that of a baby. It happens naturally and cannot be simulated. It is also intensely pleasurable and quite a remarkable experience.

There are of course a wide range of transcendental experiences, some of which you will find described in the categorySpiritual Enlightenment Experiences. Above, I have provide those that are more commonly associated with kundalini awakening, although many would argue, including Swami Vivekananda, that all enlightenment experiences have to do with kundalini entering the brain region in some capacity.

The Seven Major Chakras

The word chakra is a sanskrit word meaning wheel. It is a wheel-like spinning vortex that interpenetrates the physical body with the outer ends of each vortex forming a specific layer of the auric field. The whirling motion forms a cavity or vacuum in the center that draws in anything it encounters on its particular vibrational level. It is then processed and sent to the auric field. The major chakras of the human body are the seven chakras that are aligned along the spinal cord.

Seconday chakras of importance are located in the palms of the hands, the soles of the feet, and at major joints in the arms and legs.

First Chakra

It is through the first chakra that energy from the earth enters the suble energy system of the body, an where we would feel our connection with the earth on which we live. It gives us a connection with the life on the planet as a whole, that we are not separate little entities.

It is the seat of the Kundalini, the coiled up serpent waiting to spring. It controls the horizontal section of the body from just below the buttocks to a point just above the sexual organs; excretion and digestion of food.

We must balance this chakra before moving on to the others. Otherwise our growth will be without roots, i.e., ungrounded

Other names: Root, base muladhara, Kundalini (Sanskrit)

Situated: Base of the spine and the pubic bone (but encompasses genitals and reproductive organs)

Color: red

Element: Earth

Area of conciousness: physical body

Also our survival (as an individual and as a planet), our need for world peace and environmental balance.

Key Words: stability, solidarity, unity and form.

Physical organ association: gonads, also the glomus coccygeum or coccygeal body, adrenal gland, the kidneys and the spinal column

Relationship: to the solid part of the body, especially the bones

Importance: location of the kundalini

Attributes: athletic, cares about survival, sensuality, pleasure and power

Governs: perception of the physical world, willpower, motivation and intent

The second chakra is thought of "that which is itself, that which belongs to itself. It is primarily throught this chakra that we experience the deep feelings associated with physical manifestation: sexual energy, which is also the seat of creativity and the place where we experience that childlike wonder and excitement of things around us. A sense of innocence and wonder (which we sometimes lose because of blockages put on this c. by taboos toward sexuality.

Here we encournter change, for without change, we cannot grow.

Other Names: Sacral, sexual, svadhisthana (Sanskrit)

Situated: behind and just below the navel

Color: orange
Element: Water

Area of conciousness: emotional

Change in that we now moving beyond our understanding of ourselves and realize the awareness of others-desire arises and with it our emotions and sexuality.

Key Words: difference, seperation, change, duality, and movement

Physical organ association: spleen (Peyer's Patches) as well as the kidneys and bladder

Relationship: corresponds to the liquid part of the body-circulation, urinary

Governs: feelings of sexuality and creativity

Third Chakra

The third chakra, located by the solar plexis, has control over the solar plexis ganglia which plays an important part in our relationship to the world and to people, places, and things; our ability to connect and belong and make long term intimate associations; the love of one's home or one's loved as well as feelings of contentment and trust are all associated with this chakra.. (That nervous feeling at the pit of our stomach when something big is bothering you or you feel frightened-or you feel anxiety for no reason at all-often hits here. -or the chakra just above it, which radiates it down to the solar plexus. But they are more steady in the solar plexis, a more dulled feeling-pain, anger, fear, joy.

Transformation to a new state occurs through this chakra's basic dynamic energy and our ability to find a balance between extremes.

Other Names: Solar Plexus, manipura (Sanskrit)

Situated: solar plexus, in the V formed by the ribcage, above the navel

Color: yellow

Element: Fire

Area of consciousness: mental or intellectual body This includes thoughts, opinions, and judgments.

Key Words: combustion, fire, energy, action, power, and will

Physical organ association: adrenal glands, pancreas, liver, stomach as well as the nervous system and the bladder.

Relationship: responsible for the regulation and distribution of metabolic energy

Governs: emotional issues and issues of personal power

Fourth Chakra

The fourth chakra, the heart chakra, controls the physical body from the area of the collar boens to a point about 2 fingers above the solar plexis. There is a psychological gap b/t the 3rd and 4th chakra, a crossing point. Here a person meight begin to recognize that "self" is constantly changing as it adapts to a constantly shifting spectrum of possibilities in life. The heart chakra is associated with compassion, healing. Green is considered a healing color. Opening the heart chakra, according to Leadbeat, allows a person to sense energy fields and atmospheres. Yuo can also project energy to another person through this center. (My heart goes out to you-could be almost literal.) It is through the heart center and the "3rd eye" center that a person can project rays of energy out to antoehr person. The thymus gland, an actual pehysical gland located just above the heart, has an effect on the body's immune system.

The heart center is the regulator of a person's emotional life. If it is blocked in any way, then emotions will be distorted.

The task of this chakra is to integrate and balance the realms of spirit and mind with our physical body (matter).

Other Names: Heat, anahata (Sanskrit)

Situated: midway between shoulder blades (over the sternum)

Color: Green

Element: Air

Area of conciousness: astral body

This is the first level beyond 3-dimensional matter. Here we have the bridge between the dimensions of matter and the dimensions of spirit. Although we may refer to the "lower chakras" as being concerned with mankind, and the "upper chakras" as being concerned with spirituality and God, each chakra is no less imprortant than the other. For instance, the first chakra has a number of frequencies (all with the Red vibration), ranging from very low to very high. The goal is to rise above a chakra's lower frequencies into its higher ones.

Key Words: love, compassion, balance

Physical organ association: thymus gland (immune system), and the heart, blood, circulatory system, immune system, and the endocrine system.

Relationship: to the heart: -to love as a state of being

Governs: love, compassion, and unconditional acceptance of others

Fifth Chakra

Fifth chakra- the throat. It is associated with the element Akasa -relating to things ethereal. It controls the portion of the physical body from midpoint of the nose to the collar bones. Once activated, we become conscious of our mental body(lower are physical, etheric and astral). By activating this chakra, the person becomes aware, for the first time, that the internal worlds are real worlds. The throat chakra also controls that the internal worlds are real worlds. In addition, the throat chakra controls a person's ability to express himself or herself creatively and effectively and controls facial expression and the non-verbal. It gives a person the confidence to say no, to disagree in a reasoned way. Fear is transmuted so that one is not afraid to express himself fully in all situations.

Here we have the realm of conciusness where communication occurs, whether that be within ourselves or to and from another.

Other Names: Throat, visuddha (Sanskrit)

Situated: throat area

Color: blue

Element: Sound

Area of consciousness: etheric body

This etheric body is the template for the physical body, and represents our potential for perfection.

Key Words: sound, vibration, communication, and self-expression

Physical organ association: thyroid and parathyroid glands, lungs, vocal cords, and bronchial apparatus.

Relationship: the throat area where sound is created

Governs: communication, expression of thoughts and feelings

Sixth Chakra

6th chakra-the eye of wisdom. This chakra is sometimes identified with the pituatory gland, the master gland. This is the third eye. In this center, a person harmonizes the opposing energies, and balances the yin and yang. A person experiences himself in the fullness of the "I Am," the union of the selves.

The chakra has control over seeing, not only in the physical sense but in the mystical sense. Intuitive seeing, clairvoyance and other forms of knowing and the paranormal are part of this chakra. It controls all higher mental activities. Also, through the power of a person's mind, he can create new realities for himself on the physical plane. The person activating the th chakra would be concerned with things beyond earthly goals, which divert many people from fulfilling their Dharma.

The essence and function of this chakra is to "see" in the sense that we accept that complete vision will include both darkness and light.

Other Names: Third Eye, Brow, ajna (Sanskrit)

Situated: center of head, behind forehead

Color: Indigo

Element: Light

Area of consciousness: celestial body

It is here that we have "sixth sight," or the ability to "see" by way of clairvoyance. We use this chakra for visualization, receiving insight or inspiration.

Key Words: intuition, imagination and clairvoyance

Physical organ association: pineal (althought some believe ti is the pituaitary gland)

Relationship: the storehouse and viewing screen of all visual input from our two physical eyes and our "third eye" (the etheric organ of psychic perception}.

Governs: spirituality and the search for meaning in life, instuition, visualization

Seventh Chakra

7th Chakra-at the crown or just above the crown. The merging of the self with the all. This chakra represents our belief systems, both conscious and unconscious.

Other names: Crown, sahasrara (Sanskrit)
Situated: top of head
Color: white (some believe violet)

Element: Thought

Area of Consciousness: ketheric body

This chakra is associated with the spiritual realm.
